Characteristics of participation - A mathematician and a mathematics educator collaborating on a developmental research project
2018
International audience; In this paper, a developmental research project involving offering mathematical modelling (MM) activities to university biology students is presented, and a particular aspect is studied, namely the project as a collaboration between mathematicians and mathematics educators. The aim of the paper is to investigate what characterizes their participation in the project, and how the characteristics of the project and its development might influence this participation. Interview data as well as observation data from the MM sessions are analysed, and findings show that the mathematics educator served as a broker influencing the practice of the mathematician. It is hoped tha…

Teknillisten tieteiden akatemioiden liittyminen Tiedeakatemiain neuvottelukuntaan
2016
Językowy obraz świata w dolnośląskich oronimach pochodzących od nazw roślin i zwierząt
2019
The subject matter of analysis is oronyms, i.e. the names of mountains and hills deriving from the names of plants and animals. The names of mountains can perform the function of localization (a relation between an object and the toponym), characterization (the topographic character of an object, the shape of an object, the quality of substrate, the fauna and flora in an area), they can express the relation between an object and a man (possessive names) and they can be a reflection of material or spiritual culture. Names deriving from the names of flora and fauna are predominantly created on the basis of metonymy which makes use of the contiguity principle, replacing objects with the names …
2020
In the year 1788, the parish of Los Santos Juanes in Valencia proposed to the City Council the erection of same classical-style portico in order to beautify its outer eastern façade, surrounding the head of the temple and relying on the Plaza del Mercado. This portico was never built, but there would be an impact of such an architectural purpose in subsequent reform plans of that outstanding urban location.
2. Stato dell’arte e riferime…
The (im)possible success of disadvantaged students. Reflections on education, migration and social change
2019
The paper focuses on the ?unexpected pathways? of successful students with an immigrant background: these biographical routes, that seems socially impossible, raise theoretical issues around the individual-society, actor-structure relationship. Disadvantaged students who succeed represent a sociological challenge in the attempt to understand atypical situations and to identify the institutional processes and the structural opportunities that facilitate them, reducing ethnic inequalities in education. This framework is the starting point of the Su.Per. project (Success in educational pathways of students with immigrant background), based on the collection of written autobiographies of 65 imm…

Hölder regularity for stochastic processes with bounded and measurable increments
2022
We obtain an asymptotic Hölder estimate for expectations of a quite general class of discrete stochastic processes. Such expectations can also be described as solutions to a dynamic programming principle or as solutions to discretized PDEs. The result, which is also generalized to functions satisfying Pucci-type inequalities for discrete extremal operators, is a counterpart to the Krylov-Safonov regularity result in PDEs. However, the discrete step size $\varepsilon$ has some crucial effects compared to the PDE setting. The proof combines analytic and probabilistic arguments.
